| More Black Stars in Hollywood Films. What About Here ? |
posted 2 Aug 2001 |
There were a couple of interesting articles by Garry Maddox
in the Sydney Morning Herald today. In the first, he notes a 'cultural changing in casting' in Hollywood, with an increasing
number of films being released that star African-Americans and deal with African-American issues.
In the second, he asks if a similar change might be happening in Australia
with the imminent release of a batch of films starring Aboriginal actors and dealing with indigenous issues.

When comics are turned into live-action movies, we all know what to expect...
Uber-beings with snazzy outfits and sculpted bods who battle world-threatening evil and angst over their
superpowers, right?... Well, not always. Ghost World, which is adapted from the Dan Clowes' graphic novel of the same name,
forsakes FX and histrionics in favour of a simple story about two jaded, acerbic girls in their late teens.
It's already opened to positively frothing reviews in the US. As far as I know, though, no Oz release date has been announced yet. |

| Jumping The Shark |

I know it's an oldie, but it's still a goodie... Based on an event that marked the beginning
of the demise of Happy Days, 'jumping the shark' refers to that defining moment when something has reached its peak
and you know that 'from now on... it's all downhill'... At present, JumptheShark.com
focuses only on moments of 'shark jumping' in TV series, but plans are afoot to extend this inspired concept to
music and film. |

| John Cusack For President |

He made the tough decisions in Grosse Pointe Blank.
He couldn't be bought in Eight Men Out. He's cooler than John Malkovich. And we like his politics
so far... I thought this site was pretty funny when I first heard about it. Somehow, finding out
that it is actually run by a Democrat Party hack spoiled it a little for me...
But it's still a great idea and, considering the parlous state of political leadership in this country, I think we should translate it to an Australian context....
So tell me, which actor would you nominate for Prime Minister, and why? |

| If You Only Sue One Group of Sycophants This Year... |

Are you sick of knee-jerk critical hyperbole?
Sick of being told that every lame-ass movie released is 'the film of the decade'?...
Well, Tony Sonnet has come to your rescue! He and a group of friends who call themselves Citizens for Truth in Movie Advertising,
are sueing all the major Hollywood film companies for defrauding the public
with gushing reviews that are actually the product of payola... This, of course, would never happen on Celluloid Dreams!
They have far too much integrity to be bought out by big studios! If you only listen to one film show this week... |

| Princess... Shark? |

And now, a bit of extreme silliness...
Here's the trailer for a planned remake of that much-loved 80's fantasy flick
Princess Bride. In this 're-imagining', most of the lead roles will be played by... rubber sharks.
(A word of warning: the clip is in a 25Mb Quicktime file, so it will take a while to download.) |
