Moulin Rouge Tax Stoush Round 2 : ATO Under Fire posted 13 Aug 2001
This was in the Sun Herald yesterday, so I figured I should make a late posting... Following the cries of protest over the Tax Office's refusal to grant tax concessions to investors in Moulin Rouge, Premier Bob Carr stepped into the fray and demanded that John Howard do something about the decision... In reply, the PM assured all and sundry that the laws were under review, but there would be no relief for the 'cash-strapped' investors till said laws were changed.
Bollywood In... Wales posted 12 Aug 2001
Bollywood - it's the indisputable centre of global film production (800 films a year compared with a paltry 100 from its American counterpart) and its horizons are expanding... In recent times, Mumbai has been sending delegations to Hollywood to discuss co-productions, and shooting its special brand of cheesy melodrama in far-flung, exotic corners of the world... And there can be few that are more far-flung and exotic than its latest destination - North Wales!... This follows hot on the heels of Bollywood's 'discovery' of Scotland, and comes at a time when Hindi language films are finally breaking into the UK box office top ten... Sadly though, Bollywood isn't making it on to Welsh movie screens - there are too few prints of popular films, and these are being snapped up the larger multiplexes in England.
Film Hacking : Hollywood Fights Back posted 10 Aug 2001
With modern filmmaking reliant on computer-based editting and special effects, Hollywood studios are finding themselves increasingly vulnerable to hackers who break into their computers, download daily rushes and production notes, then post them on the Web. (Prior to the release of Tomb Raider, it was even rumoured that an entire version of the film had been made available over the Internet.) But now, Hollywood is striking back - hiring a 21 year old British uber-geek to putty up the holes in their porous security systems... Better check out these film-hack sites while they've still got access to their 'sources'. Anyone know any good ones?
We Won't Give Away The Ending, But... posted 10 Aug 2001
Are you sick and tired of all the preciousness and secrecy that's thrown around film endings that turn out to be fairly lame anyway?... Well, you're not alone. There are a number of sites out there devoted to the practice of 'spoiling' ie revealing the endings of movie. There's even one that allows you to email movie spoilers to your friends...
PLUS... When you've finished ruining a movie for others, you can then go to this site and nitpick it to death!
Young Actors Talk About 'Unveiling Character' posted 10 Aug 2001
And now, some light Friday afternoon reading about nudity in film. There's a bit of history and the thoughts of a few up-and-coming young stars, but the highlight for me was the quote from the entertainment lawyer: 'There are very specific negotiations about whether breasts, nipples or pubic hair can be shown at all, whether the camera can go above the navel, below the navel or above the knees. This is all language written into the contract'... Really? And here was I thinking that contract law was boring...
Bambi Meets Godzilla posted 9 Aug 2001
Originally made in 1969, it still ranks as one of the best single gag short films of all time. And now, it's available in an AVI format! (via fark.com)
Calls For Entries posted 9 Aug 2001
I just came across these in the filmnet email newsletter and thought they were worth mentioning... Eleni Arbus is looking for films of any length and genre that deal with HIV/AIDS. These will be screened as part of the cultural programme of the 6th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific, Melbourne 5-10 Oct 2001. Her contact is shock.me@attglobal.net... And Metro Screen has two competitions/festivals now asking for entries - Raw Nerve, which offers first-time filmmakers the chance to win $3750 worth of equipment hire & studio time, and Kaleidoscope, their annual film & video festival.
Surprise! Surprise! More Planet Of The Apes Brouhaha posted 9 Aug 2001
Considering the fuss Tim Burton made over the 'surprise ending' of Planet Of The Apes being leaked, this is quite ironic... It seems that the ending in question bears a surprising resemblance to a cartoon that appeared in a comic produced by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) three years ago. When confronted on the topic, Tim Burton replied: 'I have not seen the image and anybody that knows me knows I do not read comic books'... This comes from the man who directed Batman...
Virus Horror ! posted 9 Aug 2001
Back in the days of the Cold War, the silver screen was haunted by images of global thermonuclear destruction and monstrous creatures spawned by fallout. With the era of Mutually Assured Destruction behind us (hopefully), this nuclear horror has been supplanted by something far more insidious - virus anxiety!... Infect your mind with this article from Salon.com on viruses in film, TV and video games.
