Bombing Victim Pictures Are 'Offensive'... 'burn_islam' Is Not posted 18 Nov 2001
Or at least that's what college student Usman Sheikh found when he tried to post such an image, accompanied by a sarcastic comment about the success of the American bombing campaign, on a Yahoo message board. In no time at all, Yahoo had deemed it offensive and deleted it... Interestingly though, the Internet company's new found taste for censorship has not extended to messages advocating the extermination of Muslims, or postings by people with aliases like 'burn_islam' or 'endless_flood_of_islamic_blood'...
Muslim Tabloid TV posted 18 Nov 2001
Thanks to its exclusive access to Osama Bin Laden's home videos, Al-Jazeera has become probably the most famous TV station in the world. Now, Arab-American academic Fouad Ajami gives us a glimpse of some of the other programming that you can catch on this rising star of the Arab TV world. On the whole, it comes across like an Islamist version of American tabloid TV complete with biased news coverage, hate-filled talk shows and Hugo Boss ads... And I particularly like the graphic that 'juxtaposes a scowling George Bush with a poised, almost dreamy bin Laden'.
How To Tell If You're Watching A War posted 18 Nov 2001
From Seethru Zine in the UK, comes this utterly hilarious tick list that will help you work out if you're watching a war on TV. Also check out some of the other amusing tick lists like "Are you in Friends?" or "Are you in the A-Team?"... or anything on the site really, it's a complete bloody cack!
Harry Potter Fights Censorship posted 17 Nov 2001
Maybe we should enlist everyone's favourite kid-wizard in the fight against the NSW Net Censorship Bill... When a school in Michigan tried to ban Harry Potter books from its library because they supposedly encouraged children to dabble in ungodly wicca, a group of students set up a website to pressure for their return. The campaign succeeded and the site, Kidspeak, has broadened to become a rallying point for American schoolchildren fighting censorship.
Pundits Predict : More Fantasy Films And Superman Will Return posted 17 Nov 2001
Predicting how the War on Terror will impact on the viewing habits of the American public seems to have become the favourite pastime of culture-watchers over there... Kim Campbell of the Christian Science Monitor declares that fantasy will become the 'movie genre du jour' as American moviegoers escape into a world of wizards and hobbits. Meanwhile, Stephen Lynch of the Orange County Register predicts the return of Superman as people reject troubled Dark Knight-style superheroes in favour of the upholder of "Truth, Justice and the American Way".
Advice to Ex-Child Stars posted 17 Nov 2001
Wanna revamped your lacklustre image and revive your fading fanbase?... Then set up a weblog! That's what Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley Crusher (argueably the most annoying character on Star Trek: The Next Generation), did and it's turned him into one of the hottest properties on the Web. When it was announced that he would star in the next (and last) Star Trek movie, his site was besieged by gushing geek girls calling for him to return as 'the youngest ever Starship captain, a brilliant mathematician and a total chick-magnet'.
Bruce Lee To Star In A New Movie posted 17 Nov 2001
That's right folks - he may have been dead for 38 years, but that's not going to stop South Korean film company ShinCine Communications from bringing him back to the big screen. Naturally, this will be done digitally - BUT WHO CARES!!! Could this be the start of a new trend with dead stars being reanimated left, right and centre? If so, who would you nominate for this CGI-enabled honour?
