| In The Wake of Columbine... |
posted 17 Aug 2001 |
The Columbine High School massacre was one of those tragic events that sent shock waves through the American psyche.
In the film world, which is often blamed for such 'inexplicable' outbursts of teenage violence, it lead to a rash of
self-censorship on the part of studios... On the eve of the release of O, a version of Othello which is set
in an American high school and was originally shelved because of its depiction of youth violence, The Village Voice's Jessica Winter
looks at the impact of Columbine on US films.

Anyone who is stupid enough to swallow the idea that there will be unauthorised clones of themselves roaming the planet in a few years time
needs to head over to the The Grand List Of Overused Science Fiction Cliches.
Entry No. 20 in the 'Silly Science' section is this:
'A clone grows to match the cloned person's state of physiological development in a small fraction of the time'...

| Elvis Has Left The Set... |
posted 16 Aug 2001 |
Elvis is dead. In fact he has been dead for 24 years.
He made 31 movies for Paramount in 13 years. Some were good, most were OK, a couple were unbelievably bad.
Film Cement reckons Clambake was the worst Elvis film of all 31.
What do you think?
(posted by Anthony)
And furthermore... why has no one thought to make an Elvis movie based on this?

| Khaleil And Tom Had An Idea... |
posted 16 Aug 2001 |
We all have certain inalienable rights... The right to wake up at 3:15 am and buy a fishing licence...
The right to attend a town meeting in our underwear...
Khaleil and Tom had an idea - use the Internet to connect people with local government. They took the idea to venture capitalists
and got funding, they took the idea on-line and became the toast of the dot-com world... And then, the tech stock bubble burst...
Startup.com is a wonderful little documentary that tells the rags-to-riches-to-rags story of Khaleil, Tom and their idea.
It opens at the Chauvel and Valhalla on August 30.

| R.I.P. Tropnest |
posted 16 Aug 2001 |
It's my sad duty to inform you that as of tomorrow, Tropnest will close down. Originally set up by the Tropfest people in 1998, Tropnest was committed
to encouraging emerging scriptwriters, and actually succeeded in helping a couple of them get a foot in Hollywood's door... Despite their success, it seems that Tropnest
has fallen victim to restructuring at Trop-Corp... While you still have a chance, go to the Tropfest website and read about the great work that they were doing.

| Hard Times Ahead For Country Cinemas ? |
posted 15 Aug 2001 |
There's a lot understandable unease out there about the possibility that new copyright laws could leave the door open for
parallel importation of films. This could see foreign distributors flood the market with videos and DVDs of films even before
they have been released in theatres... And this could be particularly bad news for country towns, possibly resulting in cinemas going
the way of banks and vanishing from small-town rural Australia forever...
Is this a price worth paying for cheap DVDs?
